Western Materials visited Cemen Tech recently at our Indianola headquarters and we sat down with John Caldwell and Clint Reeves to ask them about why fast setting concrete is a perfect partner with a volumetric mixer.
Western Materials Interview
“You know, as our population continues to grow, and we have more and more congestion of the roads and highways, there’s a greater need for fast-trac approach to repairs and construction to minimize the disruption to the travelling public and also to businesses. So, it’s going to continue to grow, there’s no doubt.”
“A lot of what we do is in a rapid setting field, in that category and that type of cement doesn’t work in a barrel mixer, if you will, type truck. So, with the volumetric, concrete is produced on site, immediately on demand, and it’s able to be controlled. With the fast-setting stuff, you have to have that control.”
“Bridge overlays is one application, bridge deck repairs, pavement repairs. We’re seeing a greater need, particularly, in intersections where they can be very problematic, in terms of traffic control. So, you can actually utilize our product and come in a repave an intersection over a night or a course of several nights in a very rapid manner and definitely minimize disruption to the traffic and businesses.
If you’re comparing to standard Portland cement concrete, that cost is definitely higher, just one material to the other, but when you consider user costs and delays and those sort of things, and the fact that you can perform this kind of work at night without having to go through a ready-mix operation, if you have your own volumetric mixer, let’s say, you can, in many cases, those costs are a wash.”
